Reading the lockdown: responding to covid poetry

During 2020, sales of books increased as readers found more time to engage with fiction and return that provided comfort a sense escapism. The Covid-19 pandemic also the space for new genre, “covid fiction”, emerge. This article examines sub-genre poetry” by integrating text reader response data analysis examine representation experience in Michele Witthaus’ poem “The shape fear”. Analysis reveals participants interpret discuss drawing on foregrounded language features text, reflecting their own experiences demonstrating empathy others. These findings demonstrate covid poetry may have particular interpretative effects are geared towards self- other-understanding.
